Mental health conference to focus on gay
Columbus-The third annual "Matter of Pride" conference will be held this year on June 27.
The conference was developed for substance abuse and mental health service providers to help give them a better understanding of gay male, lesbian, bisexual and transgender patients, and their unique needs in treatment settings.
The day-long seminar is being conducted with the support of twelve area organizations, among them the Buckeye Region AntiViolence Organization (BRAVO), Columbus AIDS Task Force, P-FLAG Columbus, and the Stonewall Community Center.
One of the goals of the conference is to advance the idea among service providers that gay, lesbian and bisexual youth and adults are inherently well, and that sexual orientation per se is not a diagnostic issue.
Vincent Delgado from the Florida State and Broward County Task Forces on Aging and AIDS will give the keynote address, on AIDS and aging.
The conference will take place at the Columbus Museum of Art, 480 East Broad Street. There is a $30 registration fee that covers the cost of lunch, parking and all program materials. The deadline for registration is June 20. There are a number of partial scholarships available to students and people who are retired or unemployed. Contact Women's Outreach for Women, 1950-H Fourth Street, Columbus Ohio, 43201; or call 614-291-3639.
Breast cancer checkup at Pride
Cleveland-In 1995 the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta determined that lesbians are a medically underserved group due to barriers they may encounter from the medical community.
The Encore Plus Program of the YWCA of Cleveland's Breast and Cervical Health Education and Referral Collaborative recognizes this, and as a result will host a mobile van in conjunction with the 9th Annual Pride Parade and Festival on Saturday, June 28.
The primary goal of the Encore Plus program is to reduce the number of breast and cervical cancer deaths among women in the Cleveland area. The

program serves women over the age of 40 who have a low income, no insurance, or insurance with a high deductible.
Cuyahoga County had 1,443 breast cancer deaths from 1987 to 1990. This is the highest death rate among the 22 northeastern Ohio counties. Every three minutes, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer. AfricanAmerican, Hispanic and low income women have a significantly higher death rate from breast cancer. Medical experts believe that close to 30% of breast cancer deaths could have been prevented through the use of mammography screenings.
In addition to the deaths attributed to breast cancer, over 4,600 women die each year from cervical cancer.
Women interested in receiving a free or low cost mammogram at the Pride Festival
should call 216-881-6878 ext. 231 to preregister.

Dementia support group meets
Cleveland-The Cleveland Area Alzheimer's Association recently announced a new support group for lesbians and gay men who are caring for a relative or partner with Alzheimer's disease or AIDS-related dementia. The group is co-sponsored by the Cleveland Lesbian Gay Center, where meetings will begin on June 10 at 7:30 p.m..
"Lesbian and gay caregivers need the same information, emotional support, connectiveness, and comfort offered by support groups," said Susan Kacerek of the Alzheimer's Association. "Some have been reluctant to go to the groups currently of-
patients
fered. Thus, many gay people have been caring for each other and their families, often without the formal supports of the health care information system."
The Cleveland Area Alzheimer's Association is a non-profit organization that provides residents of Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake and Lorain Counties with information and support for people with Alzheimer's disease and their families.
This support group is only the second of its kind in the country. Meetings will be held in the Center's PRYSM Room at 1418 W. 29th Street. Following June 10, the group will continue to meet on the second Tuesday of each month. For more information, or to be put on a list of prospective group members, call Susan Kacerek at the Alzheimer's Association at 216-721-8475 or 800-4413322; or the Cleveland Lesbian Gay Center at 216-522-1999.
What I'm proud of
in this Pride season
"I am proud of the ongoing changes of the religious community for reclaiming their power in speaking out against discrimination towards the gay lesbian community; and I am thankful that the homophobes are running out of steam. All the national polls show that a majority of Americans support gay-lesbian rights.”
Rev. Troy Perry
founder of the Metropolitan Community Church
The Chronicle asked lesbian, gay, bi, and transgender leaders what they are proud of this Pride season. Their responses will appear throughout both June issues.
